Egypt Day 3 Part 1 - Abu Simbel

by cateyesrsk

Today we woke up very early for our drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site at Abu Simbel. This site is located on the western bank of Lake Nasser about 230 km south of Aswan. It houses the amazing temples built by Ramses II. The larger temple called the Great Temple is dedicated to Ramses the II and the smaller one called the Small Temple is dedicated to his beloved Queen Nefreteri. Like the temple of Philae this site was also in danger of flooding when the Aswan High Dam was built and Lake Nasser was formed. It was therefore carefully disassembled and moved to its present site above the waters of Lake Nasser. It' s original orientation was also maintained so that the rising sun casts it first rays through the entrance on to the sanctuary where Ramses sits. Pictures were not allowed inside so the pictures shown are only of the outside of the two temples.
