Day 4 - La Loberia, Punta Playa Carola and Darwin Bay - Galapagos 2014

by cateyesrsk

Today was the second day for the Sea Turtle Research project. We had a very early start since the snorkeling had to be done at low tide when it is safe to do so. We headed out to the beach and snorkeled in the beautiful bay. We saw many sea turtles and this time we were successful in getting many pictures of sea turtles. After some great snorkeling we hiked up to a lookout point and saw several swallow-tail gulls and along the way many many marine iguana. The males were dressed in their Sunday best to attract the females.
After lunch we went to another beach called Playa Carola for more snorkeling. I skipped this session and just sat at the beach enjoying the sea lions, brown pelicans and finches. I was told that the current was very strong and the views were not that great. After the snorkeling session we hiked to a vista offering a panoramic view of the north coast of the island. From here Kicker Rock, Five Fingers Rock and Frigatebird Hill were visible. At the end of the hike we reached the inlet where Darwin landed in 1835.
After a long work day we returned to town, sat with Dr. Denkinger and identified some of the sea turtle pictures taken by the group.
