Thorny

Objective 2: Creative Exposure

The camera mode (P, Tv, Av, M) and why I chose it: Av because I wanted to adjust the aperture to create a blurred background and focus on the thorn branch.

f stop used and why: I used f/5.6 because it created a short depth of field blurring the background.

shutter speed used and why: I used 0.008 sec (1/125) because it was fairly windy, and i wanted to ensure that there wasn't much movement in the picture.

ISO used and why: I used 100 because this was taken outdoors and I wanted a crisp shot.

Exposure compensation and why it was used: 0 EV was used because I liked the exposure as it was at and did not want to over/under expose the image.

Focal length and why: 47 mm was used because I wanted to get close enough that the thorns were large, but that i was still able to focus on the branch well enough.

Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design

The principles of design demonstrated (describe the use): The thorn branch is emphasized by the blurred out background, and the fact that i have focused on it. I wish that I had noticed the branch, on the right side of the photo that is partly focused when I had taken it so that i could have moved it out of the picture. I could have done so if I had arranged myself so that the thorns were on the right line of interest instead of the left.

The elements of design demonstrated (describe the use): The thorn branch is a vertical line which shows strength which is emphasized by the thorns themselves. I think there is a certain texture of rough or maybe prickliness...? in the branch. It shows shape and form in the thorns themselves.

Objective 4: Lighting

Type of lighting and why: I positioned myself so that the sun was creating left side lighting to give it a shadow on the right side side. Because the light is from the sun, and I didn't have a way to diffuse the light, this is hard lighting. I like the harsh light however because it give the branch a 3-D look.

Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)

Corrections/adjustments made: The first thing i did is sharpen the image. I messed with black and white for a while but didn't feel that it made a huge difference to the picture so kept it the way it was. Then I added one black canvas to the photo. Finally i resized the image and posted it on Flickr.

Objective 7: Photographic Styles (ex. portrait, landscape, etc.)

Type/style of photography: This is a natural photographic style.

The camera mode (P, Tv, Av, M): Av

f stop used: f/5.6

shutter speed used: 0.008 sec (1/125)

ISO used: 100

Exposure compensation: 0 EV

Focal length: 47 mm
