On display at the Tate Modern Gallery, London.

 

Hockney painted this work in 1972. It captures Hockney's boyfriend, artist Peter Schlesinger, looking down at Hockney's assistant, John St Clair, swimming underwater. Hockney was fascinated with depictions of water, glass and transparency, and with the contrast between flatness and depth, fluidity and stillness.
