Saint Matthias Episcopal Church (Now Enon Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church)--Detroit MI
This view of Saint Matthias was taken on a sunny day, so some of the facade is in shadow. The church has a history that dates to 1897 when a group of parents decided not to send their children across busy railroad tracks to Saint Barnabas School. In 1902, as a mission of Saint Barnabas, the congregation built a chapel at Lawton and Stanley Avenues. In 1915-6 a new Parish House was built on Vinewood Avenue, at the rear of the current location. The existing building was dedicated in September, 1926. The exterior is faced with gray Darlington brick and trimmed with limestone.
Saint Matthias Episcopal closed in 1978. The building now home to Enon Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church.
The architectural firm of Verner, Wilhelm and Molby designed the building. Other important works by this firm were the Redford Theatre and Foch Intermediate School.
