The Necropolis of the “Via Triumphalis” - IX
Tomb XX. As reported on the travertine stele near the entrance, the tomb XX is the sepulcher of Alcimus (Ca 60 AD). High on the stele a bass-relief is carved representing a character wearing a tunica having around him the tools of a maister builder: a set-square, a compass, a level, a land surveyor’s instrument, a chisel and a mattock. The inscription is dedicated to Alcimus, a servant of the Emperor Nero, who was the “custos de Theatro Pompeiano de scena”. He was responsible for the maintenance of the monumental scene of one of the most important theatre in Rome.
This tomb is a small cubical brick construction, covered with a thick layer of red plaster. Variuos lanterns were found on the jars inserted in the floor; these lights were used during later funerary practices and may be dated to late 1st – 2nd century AD.
In the foreground the door pillar, the architrave and the niches of the left wall , columbarium II are recognizable
