Tiger Mk 2, by Sunbeam Div of Rootes Group in England, 1967. [QE 2022 DSC_5867].

This is a "MK 2" Tiger, showing the "Rounded" style Headlight Trim pieces, as opposed to the "Peaked" style of all earlier Tigers ["MK 1" and "MK 1A"], the new style Grill, "Sunbeam" Script on the Hood [Bonnet], and chrome fender & Rocker Panel trim.

The first Series of Production Tigers produced were called "MK 1", and ended with car # 2706, seen in a previous pic in this album.

The following cars received a number of relatively minor changes and upgrades that differentiate them from the earlier cars. This led collectors and owners to create the appellation of the "MK1A". This is entirely a concoction of the market, and was never used by Sunbeam or Rootes Group to identify these cars.

Later, in 1967, a more involved set of changes were made by Sunbeam to create the "MK2", or "MKII" Tiger. These changes included upgrading the engine to the now more common 289 cid [cubic inch displacement] Ford V8, in place of the earlier 260 cid Ford V8. The newer engine also included an alternator in place of the generator. There were additional, and more obvious changes to the exterior, including a new front grill, new headlight trim pieces that were more rounded in place of the more familiar "peaked" style seen on all earlier cars.

Total production of this newer MK II for 1967 was only 536 cars, making it the rarest type of production Tiger. That was also the end of Tiger production, which had been doomed for some time, only in part because Rootes Group had been purchased by the American Chrysler Corp and it was said to be less than pleased to be involved with producing a car with a Ford engine. Chrysler had no available replacement engine that could be made to fit into the limited space of the Tiger engine compartment.
