Little by little, the course of the river changed, creating a horseshoe-shaped lake. Eventually the area dried up, leaving a layer of peat behind. The Donkmeer was only created in the late 18th and early 19th as a result of peat extraction. It flooded in the second half of the 19th century, to create this 'lake' ...
