TITHOREA TARRICINA
Tithorea tarricina è una specie di farfalla appartenente alla famiglia Nymphalidae.
Questa specie ha un’apertura alare che raggiunge circa gli 8 cm, con le ali anteriori caratterizzate da una colorazione nerastra con macchie bianche, mentre le ali posteriori sono marroni con il margine nero.
Le foglie di cui si nutrono le larve sono tossiche e questa tossicità è accumulata dal bruco e trasmessa alla farfalla, in modo da tenere lontani i predatori.
I maschi inoltre sono attratti dagli escrementi degli uccelli, dai quali ottengono gli alcaloidi pirrolizidinici.
Queste sostanze chimiche hanno molteplici scopi: aumentano la tossicità della farfalla rendendola sgradevole agli uccelli, sono essenziali nella produzione di feromoni e vengono trasferite alla femmina durante l’accoppiamento aumentandone così la longevità e la fertilità.
