L'INTERNO A TRE NAVATE
La chiesa di Santa Maria di Castello è il più antico edificio sacro di Udine. E’ possibile che esistesse già in epoca longobarda essendo stati rinvenuti all’interno, durante i restauri del 1928-30, materiali lapidei risalenti all’VIII secolo, tra cui un’epigrafe con il nome di Liutprando, re dei Longobardi (712-744). Quale fosse, tuttavia, l’aspetto della chiesa non è dato sapere, anche se si può ipotizzare avesse piccola dimensione e fosse absidata.
È certo che la chiesa attuale riflette modi e schemi incontestabilmente romanici. Ne è stata ipotizzata la costruzione all’inizio del XI secolo, in considerazione del fatto che la precedente chiesetta poteva essere stata distrutta dalle feroci invasioni degli Ungheri. Considerando l’impianto dell’edificio, pare, tuttavia, preferibile pensare all’XII secolo per le similitudini con altre chiese dell’Italia settentrionale e della Carinzia con cui condivide la partizione in tre navate.

THE INTERIOR WITH THREE NAVES
The church of Santa Maria di Castello is the oldest sacred building in Udine. It is possible that it already existed in the Lombard era as stone materials dating back to the 8th century were found inside, during the restorations of 1928-30, including an epigraph with the name of Liutprand, king of the Lombards (712-744 ). However, it is not known what the church looked like, although it can be assumed that it was small in size and had an apse.
It is certain that the current church reflects incontestably Romanesque ways and patterns. Its construction was hypothesized at the beginning of the 11th century, considering the fact that the previous church may have been destroyed by the ferocious invasions of the Hungarians. Considering the layout of the building, however, it seems preferable to think of the 12th century due to the similarities with other churches in northern Italy and Carinthia with which it shares the partition into three naves.
