The battle was over. The two of them left the scene of the battle. Communications with the resistance were re-established as Arthur and Maria's suits repaired and recharged themselves. The heavy news was delivered: Doctor Hayashi had been captured.
Arthur simply found himself overwhelmed, "I couldn't even save him."
Maria sat next to him, "Wrong, we can still save Hayashi. He'll be held and interrogated, but he'll be alive for the time being." Arthur could barely keep himself composed, "Why did you make me kill those people back there?"
Maria replied, quite flatly, "They would surely have killed us." Arthur sat in silence, Maria decided to continue talking. She wasn't exactly sure what she was going to say, but the words came anyway, "You weren't responsible for their deaths, Arthur, I was. I made that call. What happened back there had little to do with you. You were trying to save them."
Arthur continued to sit there in silence, Maria continued, "I read your file. You were enrolled in a spiritual guidance course. I guess you wont be going back to that any time soon. The file read that you doubted your own morality because you couldn't believe in the god that the Divinity Party presented to you. Well... Those four men believed in that god. They didn't hesitate in trying to murder you. I believe in a god, but I was the one that used you as a tool to kill those men."
Arthur lifted his head from his hands. Maria felt she needed to say a few more words, "You've been the most compassionate person through out this mess. You spared the lives of the men at the AOC facility, and more importantly you spared mine. If anything, you're the one that can teach us about compassion. You're the one that can teach us a thing about what being good is. Maybe the rest of us try to compensate with something that's really unnecessary."
Arthur let Maria's words internalize for a while. He could see what she said was true. He was good without God.
Arthur picked himself up, Maria did the same. Arthur spoke, "You know better than anyone where Doctor Hayashi would be taken. Lead the way!"
