Commuter Lot
Arabic Language & North African Studies, Summer 2015
Merzouga, Morocco
As we entered the outdoor market of the city, Merzouga, on the fringe of the Sahara, I was surprised to see dozens of donkeys waiting patiently outside. When I asked one of the student guides, he said simply, “parking lot.” Instead of driving into the city, the way many commuters did in my suburban town growing up, shop owners in Moroccan villages simply ride their donkey to work. The only difference is that their vehicle is fueled by carrots.
