Museum of Islamic Art
The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Doha, Qatar, was designed by Chinese-born architect I. M. Pei to reflect the spirit of Islamic architecture, which emphasizes simplicity. Pei was inspired by the 9th-century Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo, Egypt, in particular the 13th-century sabil (ablution fountain). He also traveled throughout the Muslim world for six months to learn about Muslim history and architecture and read Muslim texts. Pei’s design combines modern lines with traditional Islamic forms such as domes, geometric patterns, and arches. The museum also incorporates elements of ancient Middle Eastern structures.
