St Pancras Old Church, London as it looked in c. 1870
Close study of 19th century photographs showed the tower was different to the present one along with other minor differences such as the height of the projecting 'mini tower' to the west. Monuments visible in this view of the graveyard include the Soane monument to John Soane and the Hardy Tree. A later school building attached to the church can be seen at upper left, and also a monument paid for by Lady Coutts to the left. My research found the steam trains shown were introduced on the St Pancras routes in 1866. I also discovered that the tram lines were quite an early feature, used initially with single-deck horse drawn vehicles.
