Mansion House, St Helen's Square,York
In 1724 a committee was set up to oversee the design and construction of a dwelling for the Lord Mayor with facilities for entertaining. In 1725 construction began and it was complete enough for the Lord Mayor to take up residency. The banqueting room, which rises through two storeys across the whole front facade, took longer to finish. On the left of the entrance on the ground floor is a grand parlour, behind that is dining room. A folding screen separates the two rooms which can be used as large dining space if necessary. The dining table can be extended to seat up to 42 people. At second floor level there is a small gallery for musicians in the banqueting room, which was probably used for dancing or cards. There is large kitchen in the basement and a private apartment in the attic.
I have drawn the building after the Lord Mayor contacted me via Twitter. He wanted a copy print if possible, to auction for charity at the Lord Mayor's Ball. He offered a tour of the Mansion House and tea with him and the Lady Mayoress. I offered him the original drawing instead, which we hope will raise more in the auction. I will add watercolour to the drawing in an effort to stimulate more bids too.
