Medieval Moated Manor

The moated medieval hall at Brockhampton was built in 1425 and located at the heart of a 1700 acre estate in the Herefordshire countryside. It has been lived in by several different families for most of its history and the complete estate was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1946 by the then owner Colonel John Lutley.

The gatehouse was built from oak felled in 1542-43. It has been suggested that as this was more than a century after construction of the main house, the gatehouse was probably built for visual effect and as a display of wealth rather than for any defensive purposes.
