Pulgas Water Temple
The Pulgas Water Temple, designed by architect William G. Merchant, was erected by the San Francisco Water Department to commemorate the 1934 completion of the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct. .The aqueduct brings water 160 miles from Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park to the Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir near Redwood City; the water temple is located at the aqueduct's terminus.
It’s a small Greco-Roman style temple and long reflecting pool set at the edge of the reservoir waters and open space preserve. The temple is inscribed with the words "I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people" (Isaiah 43:20).
"Pulgas" is the Spanish word for "fleas", which were encountered by early Spanish explorers of the area. The name comes from the former Rancho de las Pulgas, an early Spanish land grant.
Hope you have a great weekend ahead! Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your visits, comments, awards and faves - I appreciate them all.
