Fascinating Forfar Photo c 1900s

Courtesy of Angus Libraries.

This came from one of the Dalgety family of Forfar, handed down from her grandfather. But even the town's doyen historian is stumped in trying to identify the event, or the building in the background. From the outfits the period is late Victorian/Edwardian. Alec Whyte thinks it may record one of the Forfar town outings, very popular in those days, to one of the nearby towns. Obviously the event was child-centred given the overwhelming proportion of children. They're in their summer finery with the odd cup or mug suggesting a picnic. A few boys are holding cricket bats, so there would have been an opportunity for playing outdoor games. The men in uniform at the back are clearly bandsmen as a few are holding brass instruments. Bruce Dorward in an email to Doug Milne has confirmed that this is indeed the Forfar Instrumental Band in a uniform that spans the period 1899 - 1906. And apparently some of the faces appear in other Band photos which Bruce has seen.
