DSC06259
The Coronation of the Virgin with Saints Joseph and Francis.
About 1605
Giulio Cesare Procaccini
Italian, Bologna 1474-Milan 1625
Oil on panel
Saints Joseph and Francis bear witness as the Madonna is crowned Queen of Heaven by God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. For such an ambitious composition, the panel is unusually small. Procaccini's figures, compressed into this narrow space, are characterized by extravagant draperies adn jewel-toned colors, which enhance their celestial aura. The solidity of forms and the hard edges of the fabric suggest that this work originates from the time when the artist was transitioning from sculpture to painting.
