Genetic variation in canines

Pictured are my two roommates dogs, Nelly and Bo. Bo is a male and is the black lab to the right. Nelly is a female and is the small sandy colored dog to the left. These dogs are the same species yet there are some drastic differences in their phenotype, which has to do with the different alleles that they have for certain genes. Breeding dogs is done in order to obtain certain characteristics in the offspring.
