Early Butterfly

This butterfly was the first of the season for me, and the earliest I have ever seen a butterfly.

It's an Eastern Comma (Polygonia comma), which overwinters in the adult form. I was surprised to learn that Commas rarely go to flowers; instead, they feed on tree sap and rotting matter. Well, I guess as a woodland species, it will have no shortage of food here :-)
