Keir says that in this area these Cyanea plants whose leaves are covered with conspicuous hairs were numerous. He also saw a single plant in the same area that looks like the typical form of C. acuminata. That plant is also hairy, but its hairs are very short. Photographs of that plant:

Cyanea acuminata, form 3 (or possibly a taxon related to C. acuminata). Occurs on the windward face of the southeastern Ko`olau Mts., O`ahu.

 

Cyanea acuminata (Gaudichaud) Hillebrand

Hawaiian names: hāhā, `ōhā, `ōhā wai

Family: Campanulaceae - the bellflower family

Endemic to O`ahu (the Ka`ala area in the northern Wai`anae Mountains, and the Ko`olau Mountains).

Federally listed as endangered.
