Our Lady of Carmel Chapel, Tiracol

Almost all of the 100-odd houses, all Catholic, have been situated around the chapel of Our Lady of Carmel at Tiracol, the northern tip of Goa. On the side (where Gregory Godinho is seen in the picture), lies a low, tiled-roof house with an unusually wide verandah or balcao. The verandah is called the "mandd" where the villagers used to settle disputes amicable between two persons. The "elder" of the village would mediate and both parties would leave only after a cordial hand-shake. The current "elder" is a highly knowledgeable Francisco Diogo Rodrigues. However, such traditional mores of ancient Goa are no longer in practice.

Tiracol is now a popular tourist spot where tourists come to visit the historic Tiracol Fort overlooking the Arabian Sea nd the Tiracol river from a vantage point. The locals, cut off from mainland Pernem by the Tiracol river, would not mind the inconvenience, however, of late, they have to fight a big project, said to be a golf course, which they fear would prove detrimental of the peaceful idyll that the little village has been so far.
