the enemy of God & his church - Norwich cathedral

Table tomb in the north nave aisle of Sir James Hobart / Hubbard 1436-1517 and wife who has been placed on the side of the greater status. Only the indents of their lost brasses remain.

Still in its original position, it was once contained by a stone screened chantry chapel until c1740 when the screen was removed. www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/750j5n

Over the tomb, heraldry survives of the Hobart star with ermine edge www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/6PK94L www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/xGZ4uY

The Hobarts were landowners at De La Tye in Norfolk in the 14c and rose to prominence with the career of Sir James

He was the younger son of Thomas Hobart of Monks Eleigh & Leyham, by Eleanor daughter of Robert Church & Ellen Tyler / Taylor

He entered Lincoln's Inn and was of "great learning in the law" He became Attorney-General in the 2nd year of the reign of Henry Vll and afterwards knighted by him and made a privy councillor, . As attorney general he had sponsored attacks on the jurisdiction of the church courts that infuriated Bishop Nykke of Norwich www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/DE3SmP who is buried here also, who urged Archbishop Warham as chancellor, in 1504 to stop Hobart "the enemy of God and his church" . By 1505 Hobart was retaliating by encouraging Norfolk and Suffolk suits that challenged the bishops enforcement of tithes and probate fees, and charged him with lax prison keeping. Nykke called chancery's jurisdiction into play and Hobart countered with that of the kings bench. In April 1507 Nykke had to sue the king for pardon. But in July 1507 the last year of the reign of Henry Vll when the old guard was changing, Hobart with 10 years still to live and no compensating promotion, was replaced (dismissed?) as attorney general, and later he paid Dudley £533.6s 8d in cash for a pardon of his own. He lived at Hales Court Loddon whose church he rebuilt. A good friend of John Paston, he is often mentioned in the Paston Letters
