Remains of Hilton Smelt Mill Flue
The smelt mill was demolished and practically erased from the landscape in the 20thC. The old flue that headed toward a stack on The Seat and the leat are the only things left to be found.
The smelt mill had a relatively early date, and was close to the village, rather than being close to the mines, such as was usual in the later designed ones.
The first mill was built hereabouts in 1697. The last one was built in 1805, and ceased smelting in 1876.
