Fill 'Er Up With Ethyl

"Fill 'er up with Ethyl."

"Ethel's not here."

Chances are, if you've never heard this joke, you're young and don't remember what a "gas station" is. In my younger days, there were these places called "Gas stations" and you went to it and pulled up in front of a gas pump. The attendant came out and asked you how much gas you wanted and if you needed your oil checked or windows washed. While you were sitting in the comfort of your car, the attendant would get the gas pouring into your tank and wash the windows; check your oil, hoses and belts; look at your battery and add some more water if it needed some; and he would even check to see if your spare tire had plenty of air in it. All these services were FREE! You paid for your gas, which was probably well under a dollar a gallon and then you drove off. Those were good days. Some stations even gave out premiums and toys for kids. I remember them offering Hot Wheels and one station my parents frequented offered a plastic Noah's Ark and each week when you got gas, you would get a different animal to populate your Ark with. And you didn't even have to get out of your car.

Nowadays, we have those computer main-frame terminals that are undecipherable by practically everybody. When you pull up at a gas pump these days, first you have to get out and pump your own gas, (at highly inflated prices like $4.19 a gallon), and secondly you're hit with all these banners, signs and advertisements vying for your attention. Check your oil and wash your windows? Yes, but only if you want to get oil on your good clothes. I, for one, think that the old way was a much better way. It even had the benefit of putting more people to work.

It's my opinion that society is not getting better but degenerating into something nobody recognizes or can identify. I thought all that technology they've been developing was supposed to make life easier for humanity. All this technology and now I have to pump my own gas.

That's not progress.
