Altar carving

Relief carving by Eric Gill, showing Christ on the cross flanked by St Thomas More and St John Fisher, both of whom were beheaded in 1535 for refusing to acknowledge Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England.

Gill also carved the Stations of the Cross in the nave of the cathedral; his work here has been the subject of some controversy since biographical revelations that he sexually abused his daughters, but for the moment it remains in place.

Chapel of St George and the English Martyrs, Westminster Cathedral, London.
