An advantage of light pipes is that I can use surface-mount LEDs. That includes the LEDs in standard packages, such as 0603, 0805. That allows to mix and match LEDs under the light pipe to create an indicator with any combination of colors.

 

Light pipes require a separate assembly step, though.
