The Austin A40 Farina Mark 2 was an update of the the Mark 1 1958-61 Farina design. The Mark II had a 4 inch longer wheelbase to increase rear passenger accommodation, the front grille and dashboard were redesigned and mechanically at first retaining the Mark I 948cc engine but with a SU carburettor replaced the formers Zenith carb increasing output to 37 bhp
In 1962 this was replaced with a 1098cc engine of 48bhp and an improved gearbox. For 1964 came a new fascia with imitation would veneer and the brakes became fully hydraulic replacing replacing a semi-cable system. The larger engined car is sometimes referred to as a Mark III
In period tuned versions of the car competed in touring car races often harrying much larger machines. In the HRDC Coys Trophy for Pre 1966 Touring cars A35s appear in two separate versions the Academy class cars which run to a one make controlled set of regulations that restrict modifications and the modified Speedwell carswith their highly tuned drive trains
