Designed by Colin Chapman as a replacement for the Lotus 16, to compete in Formula Junior, Formula Two and Formula One. The lightweight body panels were bolted to a triangulated tube frame and balanced by positioning the engine behind the driver. The Formula One specification Coventry Climax 2495cc four cylinder engine produced 239bhp.

In April 1960 a Type 18 driven by Innes Ireland gave Lotus its first, non championship Formula One win. Six weeks later Stirling Moss won the Monaco Grand Prix in a blue privately entered Lotus 18 of Rob Walker and also the United States Grand Prix. to give Lotus 2nd place in the Constructors Championship. For 1961 Formula One regulations were changed to 1.5 litre engines the Lotus was fitted with a 1.5litre Coventry Climax engine. The class of the field proved to be the faster and more powerful Sharknose Ferrari 156 but Moss won again at Monaco and at the German Grand Prix ran on the Nurburgring.

This is the Lotus 18 in which Stirling Moss achieved two of his most famous Grand Prix victories, the 1960 Monaco Grand Prix, the first GP of the 1.5 litre era in which Moss had a race long battle with a trio of more powerful shark nose Ferraris, and in the German Prix at the Nurburgring were Moss sealed the final GP win of his career

This car raced at Silverstone in the Maserati Trophy Race for Historic Grand Prix cars, Pre-1966
