The second generation Fiat Punto was launched at the 1999 Frankfurt Motorshow, the all new styling reflected the original Punto shape. and design, while the chassis and interior were completely overhauled, with a new torsion beam rear suspension.
The Punto reached the landmark figure of 5 million in 2003, and the model also received a mid-term facelift. bringing further revisions to the platform, including extensive changes to the exterior styling and engines, partly due to changes in pedestrian safety regulations. Engine changes included a new 1.4 L 16v engine, alongside the staple 1.2 and 1.2 L 16v variants, and the introduction of two HGT versions, the 1.9 L MultiJet diesel engine and the 1.8 L 16v petrol engine
The second generation was replaced by a 3rd generation in 2005, though the older car lived on as the Punto Classic, manufactured in Italy until 2010 and Serbia until 2011 and marketed in emerging markets
