Railways at Nunnery, Sheffield 1921
This Is a schematic diagram of the complex of railway lines in the Nunnery area of Sheffield based on the 1921 OS map. The lines belonged to four different companies: The Great Central Railway [GCR], the Midland Railway [MR], the London & North Western Railway [L&NWR] and the Nunnery Colliery Railway.
The L&NWR and the Nunnery Colliery lines have all gone. The first section of the Nunnery Colliery branch from the Midland now forms the chord connecting the Midland to the GC - this is used by the hourly Sheffield-Lincoln service.
The GC line through Victoria is single track as far as Deepcar where there is an exchange siding for the Stocksbridge steelworks. (Postscript: Taken out of use Sept.2024)
The Sheffield Parkway and the Sheffield Supertram depot are the present day occupants of the area south of the GC line.
