A Dream Come True - Malaika
Masai Mara National Reserve
Kenya
East Africa
This image was a dream come true for me. You know how you see an encounter happening on a nature show and you say to yourself, what I wouldn’t give to see something like that out in the real world. Well, what I dreamed of seeing was a cheetah jumping on the roof of a jeep, and in the Masai Mara, it came true.
A great many times on this African trip, my photography group were the only ones at the location of a photo event. This day, however, another vehicle was with us from another camp. We were all lined up, first my jeep, another one of ours, and then the next jeep over was theirs. A mother cheetah named Malaika decided to jump up on the top of their jeep to observe the surrounding countryside. Well, the people in the jeep had part of the roof open, and they were actually standing up thru the roof taking pictures of her sitting there while she was staring off into the distance and not paying them any attention. Cheetahs occasionally jump on jeeps in the wild to locate prey, and do not seem to mind the people, or maybe the animal thinks of them as part of the jeep, not as separate entities. Well, once Malaika the cheetah looked in their direction, the people all decided to play it safe, and finally sat back down in the vehicle.
This made the way clear to take photographs of Malaika by herself on the roof. I took over 30 photos hoping to get one of her looking in our direction, and this one is it. Most of the others are of the cheetah looking in the direction of a herd of impala in the distance.
The photo is cropped only to show the very top of the jeep and nothing else.
