La Cordata at the museum of Stone and Masons, Castello Lavazzo, October 2018

The museum, which is based in Castellavazzo, is dedicated to the activity of extraction and processing of stone, which was the source of wealth of the area since the fifteenth century. By means of images, explanatory texts and archaeological-industrial finds, the visitor is led to the discovery of this ancient craft.

There is evidence of stone extraction from Castellavazzo quarries since the fifteenth century, although the most prolific period for the processing and trade of this material was between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The Castellavazzo mining area had twenty extraction sites and the amount of required work occupied all the inhabitants of the place as quarrymen and marble workers. The extracted stone was used not only for trade but also for the creation of works within the municipality: it is easy to see buildings, stairs, window sills, fountains and pavements sculpted to perfection in red and yellow marble.

The exhibition is introduced by a study on the geological history of the area and on different types of stone of the place, followed by a description of how the raw material has been used for the production of manufactured goods and end with the details on the process and product decoration.

Outside of the exhibition it is also possible to visit the handicraft workshop, where chisels and mallets are still used.
