Looking West Along the Yarra River Towards Princes Bridge and Docklands - Birrarung Marr, Melbourne

Melbourne's Yarra River can be a very busy thoroughfare: not least of all on a bright Saturday morning in early January, as dozens of rowers and pleasure craft take to the water.

I had a lovely morning outing along Melbourne's Birrarung Marr with the Famous Flickr Five + Group. Walking along the corniche by the Yarra River provides some beautiful views of the Melbourne central business district also known as "the grid" because the original Melbourne city was based on a grid of main streets, famous Southbank precinct and views east along the Yarra.

Birrarung Marr is an inner city park between the Melbourne central business district and the Yarra River. It was opened in 2002. The name "Birrarung Marr" means "river of mists" and "river bank" in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, the Indigenous inhabitants at the time of European settlement of the Melbourne area.
