Philip Schuyler

Philip Schuyler was a Major General during the Revolutionary War and later a Senator from the state of New York. During the war, he put together a plan for his army to invade Canada in 1775, but poor health cause him to give the army over to General Richard Montgomery who would die while invading Quebec. He also drew up a plan for Saratoga to defeat the British. General Horatio Gates would accuse Schuyler of not fulfilling his duties as an officer and congress would put Gates in charge of Saratoga where he would be credited with the victory. Schuyler went to Congress asking for a court marshal and would be vindicated for those charges. He would resign his post honorably in 1779. During the war, he would also serve on the Continental Congress from New York. He served in 1775, 1777, and 1779-1780. His daughter Elizabeth would marry Alexander Hamilton. He is buried in Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, NY.
