Chicago Tribune Future Printing Press-Off Wright Blvd Schaumburg IL
With people posting final shots of Union Pacific working the Chicago Tribune Freedom Center printing press in Chicago lately I thought it would be a good time to show where print production will move by this July when the Tribune has to vacate it for demolition work for the new casino.
Last year Tribune parent Alden acquired the printing press of the Daily Herald in suburban Schaumburg. This facility was opened in 2003 which makes it twenty years newer than the Freedom Center. It is served by CPKC off a long lead that crosses Iriving Park Road and goes north. Judging from the length of the tail track on its north side which appears to be able to hold three boxcars at a time I would estimate that is the capacity inside as well.
I have never caught a train on his lead or servicing the Daily Herald printing press nor have I ever seen a picture of one. I do not know how often it is serviced by train but I would guess seldom from the appearance of the rails. There appear to be no other active CPKC customers left on that Schaumburg lead that goes almost as far north as Wise Road.
The Chicago Tribune will continue to print the Daily Herald at this facility as well as other papers like the Sun-Times and Wall Street Journal. The Daily Herald is the third largest newspaper in Illinois and will continue minus its own printing press.
