Der Adler der Deutschen Reichsbahn : Otto Firle : in : Gebrauchsgraphik : Jahrg. 1 - Heft No. 3 : Edit : Dr. H.K. Frenzel : Phönix Druck und Verlags G.M.B.H. : Berlin SW68 : Deutschland : 1924 : Endgültige Fassung 1922
An article in Gebrauchsgraphik issue number 3 from 1924 on the design of the German Reichsbahn badge, the eagle designed by Otto Firle. Firle (1899 - 1966) was a German architect and designer who, in post-WW1 years, designed several well known trade marks, badges or logos including early versions of the Lufthansa 'crane', a badge similar to this for the Deutsche Reichspost and the Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft mbH.
Deutsche Reichsbahn was formed in 1920 to unify the vast majority of German railway operations under the new Weimar Republic. The badge seen here, designed by Firle in 1922, was in use over the period of the 1924 reorganisation that created Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft , until the end of the Republic in 1933. The article shows the final version, in black and yellow, used on passenger carriages, the design model as well as four of Firle's working sketches showing stages in the evolution and differing concepts for the design.
