Magazine advert for LVG MBH, Berlin : in Sonderheft Verkehrsreklame ; Travel advertising special issue : Das Plakat : Heft 8, August 1920 : Verlag Das Plakat : Charlottenburg 2 , Berlin, Deutschland : artwork by Fritz Neumann-Fred

One of a series of three magazine adverts reproduced in the "Travel Advertising" special issue of "Das Plakat" for August 1920. The design is by Fritz Neumann-Fred who employs a strong 'plakatstil' look across much of the advertising he was commissioned to design by LVG at the time. The bulk of his work for LVG appears to have been c.1918.

Luft-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft m.b.H. had its origins in the use of dirigibles (for both passenger flights and advertising) in 1911 but by 1912 had started to undertake both the design and manufacturing of aircraft. Based in Berlin-Johannisthal they employed at various times some well known names in German aviation including Ernst Heinkel and Franz Schneider. As can be imagined the company was busy during World War One fulfilling military orders; at the end of hostilities the company was producing some 170 planes a month and employing 3,500 workers. Post-war it would appear that LVG were required ti construct or convert military aircraft for civilian use.

I am unsure if LVG followed the route of other German aircraft builders at the time and went into direct airline operation.

The printers are shown as Gebrüder Feyl of Berlin SW 48. Thsi advert shows aircraft being used for air mail - "Durch Flugpost".
