"Is your letterbox up to date?" : leaflet issued by the British GPO, 1965 : illustrations by William Hewison
A standard letterbox - what a marvellous thought! Indeed, this leaflet was issued when the British Standards Institute had issued BS 2911 for a standard letterbox specification, both in terms of dimensions and positioning, and here is the Postmaster General no less politely asking that builders, architects and householders gain his appreciation by co-operating with the new standard. There still is a Standard letterbox - it is now BS EN13724.
The leaflet depicts the then GPO symbol and is illustrated by William Hewison (1925 - 2002). Hewison was a well known cartoonist and at the time was not only a contributor to but art director of Punch Magazine.
