Forest Mother-of-Pearl
The Mother-of-Pearl, too Forest Mother-of-Pearl or Common Mother-of-Pearl (Protogoniomorpha parhassus, too Salamis parhassus) is a species of butterfly found in lowland forest areas of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal to South Africa and Madagascar.
The Mother-of-Pearl is a large butterfly; the wingspan is 65–85 mm for males and 75–95 mm for females.
The base colour of the uppersurface of the wings is greenish-white with a violet sheen in the wet season, and pearly-white in the dry season. The forewing has a black-tipped, hooked apex. The wings have a few red eye-spots which are ringed with black. There are black spots near the margins of both the fore- and hindwings. The underside of the wings has a greenish-white base colour, with eye-spots corresponding to those on the uppersurface.
This picture was taken in the indoor tropical butterfly garden Passiflorahoeve in Harskamp, the Netherlands.

De Parelmoer, Mother-of-Pearl, ook Forest Mother-of-Pearl (Protogoniomorpha parhassus, ook Salamis parhassus) is een vlindersoort die leeft in de laaglandbossen van Afrika ten zuiden van de Sahara, van Senegal tot Zuid-Afrika en Madagaskar.
De Mother-of-Pearl is een grote vlinder; de vleugelspanwijdte is 65 à 85 mm bij de mannetjes en 75 à 95 mm bij de vrouwtjes.
De basiskleur van de bovenkant van de vleugels is groenwit met een paarse glans in het natte seizoen, en parelwitte glans in het droge seizoen. De voorvleugel heeft een zwarte top. De vleugels hebben een paar rode zwart geringe oogvlekken. Er zijn zwarte vlekjes aan de buitenkant van zowel de voor- en achtervleugels.
De onderzijde van de vleugels heeft een groenachtig witte basiskleur, met oogvlekken overeenkomend met die op de bovenkant.
Deze foto is gemaakt in de tropische vlinderkas van zorgboerderij De Passiflorahoeve bij Harskamp op de Veluwe.
