Govăjdia: the oldest standing modern blast furnace of Europe built in 1806

Govăjdia blast furnace with continuous smelting process equpipped with Cowper stowes built by the Austro-Hungarians in 1806. It's located approx. 17 km by road from Hunedoara. It used the iron ore from the mines of Ghelari and charcoal made from the wood surrounding the area. Here they have made some of the structure components for the Eifel Tower in Paris. It was decomisioned in 1912 when the Hunedoara steel factory was inaugrated in 1884, it also had a narrow gauge (76 cm between the rails)rail system from Govăjdia to Hunedoara and from Govăjdia to Crăciuneasa witch was cuted for scrap.
