Part of former Brompton Gasworks in Chief Street. Foundation stone of 100-foot chimney 23 Dec 1862 by Henry Ayers.

“The ground occupied by the works is about four acres in extent, enclosed by a substantial rubble-stone wall six feet high. . . . The buildings will consist of the retort house and coal store, a large chimney, purifying house, station, meter house, governor house, photo meter room and office, a store, blacksmith's shop, and a manager's residence.”
