Lower Mitcham Uniting church

Foundation stone 16 Dec 1884 by Mrs S Chiles, architect Thomas Parker of Port Adelaide, Mitcham bluestone with red brick & cement dressings, opened 15 Apr 1885 as West Mitcham Primitive Methodist, Methodist after Union 1900, renovated 1928, later known as Lower Mitcham Uniting, closed 1994 when congregation merged with Daw Park, Panorama & Colonel Light Gardens. First church opened Sep 1865, became school room when new church built 1885, demolished 1965.

 

“He was pleased that the attendance had so increased of late as to necessitate the erection of a larger edifice, and he hoped it would still increase until the new building would be found too small to hold all who desired to attend. . . The building, which measures 45 feet by 30 feet inside, is placed in front of and adjoining the present church, which it is intended to convert into a schoolroom. The edifice will be constructed of Mitcham stone, with red bricks and cement dressings. The style of architecture is Gothic of the Norman period with slight modifications. The front elevation contains three small Gothic windows, one with quatrefoil, and the other two with trefoil lights and cusped work. These lights are intended to be filled with stained glass. . .
