Iqaluit's monumental stone sculpture, underway
Three Inuit carvers spent two summers shaping and polishing a monumental carving in Nunavut's capital. And they are working with hard granite, not soft soapstone. Each carver is from a different region of Nunavut. Carvers are Inuk Charlie of the Kitikmeot, Paul Malliki of the Kivalliq and Looty Pijamini of the Qikitaaluk. They started last summer with a model, then this 15 foot long base and with its 6 foot long caprock it will be 12 feet high. Look for its unveiling in downtown Iqaluit this summer. The massive sculpture has been commissioned by NTI, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.
