256/365 The Wave

The story behind this one goes back over two years to when we first passed through Kanab in Southern Utah and found out about this amazing rock formation and hike.

They only let 20 people a day into North Coyote Buttes and this is decided by a lottery draw 10 of which are 4 months in advance online and 10 from a walk in lottery the day before.

Fast forward two years to May of this year and we entered the online lottery. The lottery was run on the 1st of June which can sometimes have thousands of applicants and we were unsuccessful. We planned two nights in Kanab into our roadtrip to give us two chances at the day before draw, and headed off at the crack of dawn from Bryce Canyon for entry number one. There were 80 people there that day and we walked away unsuccessful once again. We had one chance left before we left Kanab and went in there with no expectation. There were 60-70 people there, one of whom had been there applying every day for 8 days! When our number was called out (the second to be called) it felt a little unreal after waiting so long but we'd done it!

We wanted to make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity and decided to hire a guide to take us there as we wanted to go during the day and stay until after dark to do a bit of light painting and shoot the Milky Way. There were many warnings about people who had got lost and died out in the dessert and we didn't fancy our chances of finding our way back out in the dark!

We met our guide (Nermo from Seeking Treasure Adventures) at 8.30 and climbed aboard his Hummer for the off road trip to the trail head. A 3 1/2 mile trek over rough terrain of deep sand and slick rock and two hours later this was the sight that met us. A stunning and surreal landscape which only a handful of people ever get to see. We felt very privileged to be there and with the help of Yermo we got see see a lot of other great stuff around the area and beyond The Wave. We hiked the best part of 12 miles carrying all our camera gear and 4 litres of water and thoroughly enjoyed every step! The rest of this story about out night time experience here will follow later!
