Lichfield District Council
Seal of the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield Cathedral (9x2cm)
Location: Lichfield District Council
Accession number: 1983.39.6
The seal of the Dean of Lichfield Cathedral, set within a circular wooden mount.
Imprinting this seal stamp into hot wax allowed the Dean of Lichfield Cathedral to leave his mark upon letters and official documents, serving as a guarantee of legitimacy.
The seal is constructed of brass with a recessed etching of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child. To her side is a Bishop, wearing a mitre and holding a crook. Beneath the figures is a small crest depicting a cross with a smaller cross in each quarter. An oval border surrounds the image containing the Latin phrase: "CATHEDRALIS LICHFIELD SIGILLVM DECANI ECCLESIE" (Seal of Dean of Lichfield Cathedral)
The small crest at the base of this design is often used as a simplified form of the seal of the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield Cathedral, whilst this larger seal acts as a more ornate version.
Also within Lichfield's collection are four wax casts which have been taken from this seal (1983.39.7-.10).
