Datsun 120Y Wagon (B210 - 1973)

The B210-Series Datsun, known as the 'Sunny' in some markets, and as the '120Y' in others, including Australia was released in 1973. The model came in a variety of body styles, including sedan, wagons and coupes. Squint, and you can see the Japanese take on the period US coke-bottle styling theme.

The 120Y copped a lot of criticism here in the Australia from the motoring press at the time (and for the next 30 years).

Was it really that bad? Contemporary automotive publications seem to indicate that it was. Slower (and uglier) than the preceding model, the 'extra' styling didn't help either, and kind of indicated that he car had lost some of the former model's modest honesty.

Now, 40-ish years on, you can kind of see where they were going. Add wheels that are a couple of inches taller and wider, and lose a couple of inches from the springs. paint the car is something other than toxic puke, and fit, say the engine from a 200SX, and you'd have a bit of a sleeper. At 910 kg (2000 lb) this is a pretty light car.

Still a bit ugly and worse on the inside.

The wagon model shown here is a close replica of the car owned by my next door neighbours when I was growing up. There car was a little faded by the time I was paying attention, but a brother-from-another-mother match for the E30 Corolla wagon that my family had.
