Clinker Beach: J.H. Sankey

Taken on 3 May 2014 and uploaded 1 September 2024.

Seen at Tilbury's Clinker Beach, on the south bank of the River Thames...

I started taking photos of bricks on the river when I realised they came from all over: Tilbury is a small town in Essex, close to but not in London, although sharing the same river...

Canning Town is in east London and J H Sankey was a local seller and maker of bricks, and Clinker Beach was used as a landfill site for London, so this can be said to be a local brick...I have others. It seems to be merging with what it was dumped with: signs of wood, cloth, metal are present.

Strangely, there was a brick manufacturer in Tilbury, dating back to the end of the 17th century, 150 years or so before Sankey. A man born as Daniel Foe who had a chequered career as agitator, spy, business failure, debtor, purveyor of falsehood, convict and novelist (he later affected the 'De' prefix). A sort of Boris farage, except that he could write and "Robinson Crusoe" is one of his works.
