Chilled Fluorescent Mineral: Ethiopian Microcline (var. Amazonite) - UVc

Chilled Fluorescent Mineral: Ethiopian Microcline (var. Amazonite) - UVc

FOV: 4" wide.

From the Kenticha Mine in Ethiopia comes this specimen of microcline - a potassium feldspar also known as Amazonite. To enhance its fluorescence, it was kept in the freezer overnight. Cooling the mineral reduces the amount of thermally based quenching which allows more of the excited electrons to return to their ground state via a fluorescent "jump".

Shown under UVc light.
